If your AC keeps turning on and off every few minutes, something is off. That pattern, called AC short cycling, is one of the more common HVAC problems homeowners and business owners run into, and it's worth addressing before it turns into a more expensive repair.
What Is AC Short Cycling?
Under normal operating conditions, how often your AC should turn on and off can vary. However, most systems run two to three cycles per hour, with each cycle lasting roughly 15 to 20 minutes. When your AC unit turns on and off repeatedly in much shorter bursts (every two to five minutes, for example), that's short cycling.
Short cycling puts excessive strain on your system's components, inflates your energy bills, and shortens the overall lifespan of your equipment. Left unchecked, it can escalate from a nuisance to a serious mechanical problem.
Why Does My AC Keep Turning On and Off?
Several issues can trigger AC short cycling, and some are more obvious than others. Here are the most common culprits:
- Oversized equipment. An AC unit that's too large for your space cools it down too quickly and shuts off before completing a full cycle. While that might sound efficient, it actually prevents proper dehumidification and accelerates wear on key components.
- Low refrigerant. A refrigerant leak creates pressure imbalances that force the system to shut down prematurely. Refrigerant handling requires a licensed HVAC professional with EPA Section 608 certification.
- Dirty air filter. A clogged filter limits airflow, which causes the system to overheat and cycle off as a safety precaution. Swapping out your filter on a regular schedule is one of the easiest ways to prevent this.
- Frozen evaporator coil. Poor airflow or low refrigerant levels can cause the evaporator coil to ice over. Once that happens, the system can't complete a normal cooling cycle, and short cycling follows.
- Thermostat problems. A malfunctioning thermostat, or one positioned near a heat source like a sunny window or a lamp, can feed inaccurate temperature readings to your system and trigger short, repeated cycles.
What To Do When Your AC Unit Turns On and Off Repeatedly
Start with a few basics. Replace your air filter if it's dirty, and make sure all vents and registers are open and unobstructed. If the problem continues, it's time to call a professional. Issues like refrigerant leaks, frozen coils, and failing components require trained technicians with the proper tools, certifications, and hands-on diagnostic experience to resolve correctly.
Continuing to run a short-cycling system can eventually cause compressor failure, which is one of the most costly AC repairs you'll face. The sooner you address it, the better.
